Dark ambient is ambient music that chooses the night: low drones, crypt-like resonances, industrial textures slowed down to near stillness. Lustmord set the reference point with Heresy in 1990, recorded inside real underground spaces. It is a music of total immersion, cousin to horror cinema, sustained by a faithful worldwide scene and a handful of devoted labels. There is no dancefloor here, only a room built entirely out of sound.

Producing Dark Ambient
Dark ambient has no tempo, and moves even slower than classic ambient: a drone can take 45 seconds to rise, with an event every couple of minutes, and a BPM, if set at all, only serves to line up the delays. Nothing sings here, everything rumbles, movement coming from free, unsynced LFOs at 0.03 to 0.05 Hz on filter, pitch and pan, so nothing ever repeats exactly. There is no regular percussion, only isolated impacts, a dull thud every 20 to 40 seconds, set against field recordings from underground spaces, cisterns and parking garages, the way Lustmord recorded Heresy. The bass is the low drone and it dominates everything, aimed at 30 to 60 Hz, a sine for weight plus a filtered sawtooth for body, two oscillators detuned to produce a slow beating that vibrates the room.
