Future Garage
Bass · 2007 · 130 to 140 BPM · also known as Future Garage UK
The lingering shadow of 2-step in the late 2000s: garage rhythms veiled in reverb, crackle and urban melancholy. Burial is its unwitting founding figure, Untrue its landmark record. The term gathers a sensibility more than a scene, the feeling of rainy nights after the club has closed, a memory of dance music rather than dance music itself, closer to a mood board than to a rulebook for producers.

Producing Future Garage
Work between 130 and 140 bpm, using 2-step patterns but with a blurred feel: hits placed by hand off the grid, delayed slightly so the drums seem to stumble. Build a 2-step skeleton, kick on 1 and 2.5, snare on 2 and 4, but treat every sound as a found object, a scratched vinyl snare, a lighter click, a sampled street clap, pushed through reverb and a short delay with highs cut, plus continuous vinyl crackle. For bass, keep a soft sub sine in long notes in minor, no wobble, no Reese, a floor rather than a character. Layer pitched, ghostly R&B vocals, time-stretched with artifacts and drowned in reverb, field recordings of rain and streets, filtered pads, and a distant Rhodes playing two chords, everything gray and far away.
The full production course, in French: tempo, drums, bass, sounds, arrangement, mix, plugins and machines, and a step by step start.
