Euro Disco

Disco · 1975 · 115 to 130 BPM

Euro disco was the European studio industry's answer to American disco, with Munich and Milan leading the way. Fewer musicians, more machines: Giorgio Moroder replaced the orchestra with sequencers and introduced the repeating electronic bassline that would announce the whole of dance music to come. Vocals were often sung in slightly approximate English, the production precise and cold, and that is exactly what audiences loved. Where American disco kept its live band warmth, the European studios pushed toward mechanical repetition and controlled arrangements, a shift that quietly rewrote the rules for everything that followed in club music.

Producing Euro Disco

Set the project at 126 BPM with full quantization and zero swing: Munich and Milan worked to the metronome, so eighth notes stay straight and groove comes from a repeating synth sequence rather than a drummer. Kick lands on all four beats, snare doubled with a clap on two and four, hi hats in even eighths or sixteenths, open on the offbeats but restrained, tambourine and cabasa standing in for congas. The signature is the sequenced bassline: a repeated eighth note through a dotted eighth delay, sawtooth wave, low pass filter near 300 Hz with light resonance, short 80 ms envelope, modeled on I Feel Love, kick and bass landing together on the beat. Add a modular style lead, an ARP Odyssey acid line, string synth pads, and a vocoder for the cold finish.
