Producing Tribal House
Work between 125 and 130 BPM, a touch faster than classic house so the percussion can run. The feel is a drum circle laid over a straight kick: the kick itself stays even, but every percussion layer has its own placement, some slightly ahead, others a few milliseconds behind, and that friction creates the groove. Use hand played loops where possible, or humanise timing slightly. Tracks run long, eight to ten minutes, with tension building through accumulated layers rather than synth risers. The kick is a dry, strong 909 on all four beats, with little or no clap, the backbeat role instead taken by a tom or timbale. Layer syncopated tom patterns tuned to different pitches, sampled congas in a tumbao loop, bongos in sixteenths, accented timbales, a shaker and a bell, each a short pattern stacked in cross rhythms.
