Breakbeat Garage
Bass · 1999 · 130 to 138 BPM · also known as Breakbeat UKG, Garage Breaks
Breakbeat garage is the 2000 to 2003 variant of garage that puts breaks back under warp basslines, sitting between late 2 step and early dubstep. Menta, Agent X and the Stanton Warriors held the decks for it. It occupies a narrow slot in the genealogy, but it is through this style that the garage lineage relearned the syncopation of breaks before passing it on to dubstep. Though short lived, it functioned as a crucial relay point, carrying rhythmic ideas from 1990s jungle and breakbeat culture forward into the bass heavy, warp driven productions that would come to define UK dance music through the following decade.

Producing Breakbeat Garage
Breakbeat garage sits at garage tempo, 132 to 138 BPM, keeping UK garage's heavy swing, 58 to 62 percent, carried through a full breakbeat rather than programmed hats, festive and bouncy, closer to nu skool breaks than the darker dubstep just emerging. A funk break, chopped in slice mode and looped with a grainy timestretch, reorders every four bars while a 909 kick on beat one and the and of two and a snare on two and four keep a garage foot, the break filtered to clear the kick. The bass is intact speed garage warp, sawtooth and square with a falling pitch envelope and an enveloped low pass filter, on the break's offbeats, holding when it rolls and filling when it stops. MC hooks from pirate radio, Korg M1 stabs, sirens and rave stabs keep the club ready energy.
