Psybient
Downtempo · 2001 · 70 to 100 BPM · also known as Psychedelic Ambient, Psy Chill, Ambient Psy
Psybient is the ambient wing of psytrance culture: cosmic pads, dub basslines, fractal textures and ethnic instruments, the chill zone of festivals grown into its own continent. Shpongle is its baroque flagship, Carbon Based Lifeforms its crystalline Swedish counterpart, and Ultimae the label that built it a cathedral. The near-synonymous names psybient and psychill both describe roughly the same territory.

Producing Psybient
Psybient sits between 70 and 100 BPM when there is a beat at all, many passages dropping it entirely, treating tempo as a frame for syncing delays across tracks running eight to twelve minutes. Build a round, deep kick with a long decay, and a dub snare or rimshot on beat three washed through a Space Echo at high feedback. Layer sampled ethnic percussion, tabla, udu, djembe, frame drum, sliced and replayed in humanized two-bar motifs, letting the beat enter only after two minutes. The bass is a round dub tone, an Operator sine or Moog with soft saturation and a long release, holding the tonic and minor seventh with slow glides, rolling rather than pulsing. Above it, stack long evolving pads with slow LFOs on wave position, changing so gradually nobody hears the transition.
