Chill-Out

Downtempo · 1990 · 90 to 115 BPM · also known as Chillout, Chill Out, Ambient Chill

Chill-out was born in the back rooms of English raves around 1990, when the KLF released Chill Out and clubs began opening separate rooms where dancers could catch their breath: soft pads, radio samples and slowed-down beats. It later grew into an industry of poolside compilation albums, but the original chill-out sound remains an art of decompression, ambient music with a smile rather than a straight face. It keeps a foot on the dancefloor even while resting, letting a beat drift in and out rather than disappearing altogether. Acts such as the KLF and, later, Zero 7 shaped its warm, unhurried, slightly wistful character.

Producing Chill-Out

Chill-out treats time as more important than tempo: 80 to 100 BPM when there is a beat at all, often none for minutes, its freedom to let rhythm appear, fade and return slower sets it apart from downtempo. Pick around 92 BPM as a delay reference and let pads float unquantized; when a beat arrives keep it simple and unswung, like a machine left running next door. Build it from a softened 808, kick filtered low, snare swapped for a reverb-drowned rimshot, low-velocity eighth hats, through a filter opening slowly so the beat seems to arrive from afar. The bass is soft and sparing, a fingered electric line or a long-release sine Moog holding notes over two bars, quieter than in downtempo since it accompanies rather than leads. Wide detuned pads and field recordings complete the sound.
