Euro Techno
Techno · 1989 · 130 to 145 BPM
Euro techno is techno as continental Europe digested it in the early 1990s, forged between German raves, post new beat Belgium and Italian studios. More direct and harder edged than Detroit's original blueprint, it embraces the big gesture: rave riffs, rising breaks, and kicks pushed to the front. It stands as the common trunk from which trance, hardcore and continental club techno all branch off, a bridge genre that took Detroit's machine funk and reshaped it for the scale and intensity of the European rave floor.

Producing Euro Techno
Run between 128 and 140 BPM, faster than Detroit or Belgium, with Speedy J and the German raves pushing toward 135 or 140, with almost no swing: the groove is straight and martial, driven by hat velocities and rolling fills that push each 16 bar phrase forward. A sustained 909 kick, sometimes doubled for body, sits on every beat, with a clap on two and four, closed hats in sixteenths opening on the offbeats, and rising snare rolls tightening into thirty second notes before a drop. Bass is a simple sub on the tonic, or more typically a low sawtooth rave riff on an Alpha Juno filtered around 800 Hz, layered with a sub sine below 80 Hz. The defining sound is the Alpha Juno hoover, joined by sirens, pitched vocal snippets and sampled rave stabs.
