Banging Techno
Techno · 1993 · 140 to 155 BPM
Banging techno is 1990s English warehouse techno at its most direct: hard, fast and stripped of melodic detour, sitting between the acid sound of free parties and continental hard techno. The term stuck in British raver slang for this beating, no-frills core of the techno sound, the soundtrack to nights that ask no questions. It favours raw drive over songwriting, built from a driving kick, layered reverb and a looping acid line rather than melody or arrangement tricks. It remains a DJ tool as much as a genre: functional, relentless and built for warehouses rather than concert halls.

Producing Banging Techno
Banging techno runs 135 to 145 BPM with no swing on a dead-straight grid, its energy from pumping compression rather than groove: tune the kick's reverb tail to die out just before the next hit. Build the kick in three layers, a compressed 909 sample, a heavily sidechained reverb bed, and a click transient, then add 909 hats in sixteenths at fixed velocities, an open hat on the offbeats, a dry clap on 2 and 4, and a snare roll every two bars. The bass is really the kick's own rumble, a sidechained, low-passed reverb tail, joined by a short looping 303 acid line, both tuned to the kick and kept mono below 120 Hz. The palette stays narrow: a saturated 909, one acid loop, one rave stab, and aggressive compression.
