Deconstructed Club

Bass · 2010 · 120 to 160 BPM · also known as Post-Club, Deconstructed

Deconstructed club shatters the dancefloor into fragments: signifiers of rave, reggaeton and grime cut apart and reglued without a stable grid, a post-internet aesthetic mixing violence and fragility. PC Music on one side, NON and Janus collectives on the other, the style served as a laboratory for the decade's experimental pop, from Arca to SOPHIE. It treats the club track less as a functional tool than a piece meant to be listened to as much as danced to.

Producing Deconstructed Club

Deconstructed club has no fixed tempo, and that is the point: start from a base of 130 to 140 BPM to converse with grime and dembow, then break it with tempo automation, sections dropping to 90 or jumping to 160, rhythmic fragments from rave, reggaeton, grime and ballroom never holding for more than four bars. A saturated gabber kick might run four bars, a dembow pattern for two, an isolated grime snare for one, followed by silence, with metallic impacts and slamming doors placed off-grid as drums. The sub works as an impact rather than a line, a sine explosion at 40 Hz with the pitch envelope dropping an octave in 200 milliseconds, kick and sub ignoring or colliding rather than sidechaining cleanly. On top, granular synthesis stretches voices into clouds and hyperreal textures snap like plastic and latex.
