Nu Style Gabber

Hardcore · 2003 · 150 to 165 BPM · also known as Nustyle, Mainstream Hardcore, Nu Style

Nu style gabber is hardcore reborn at the turn of the 2000s in a slower, heavier form: long, sculpted kicks around 150 to 160 BPM, modern mixing, and MC choruses. Angerfist became its worldwide mask, Masters of Hardcore its cathedral. This is the hardcore of today's big venues, a Dutch industry fully embraced with its own stars and anthems. Where old-school gabber prized speed and chaos, nu style prizes weight and polish.

Producing Nu Style Gabber

Nu style gabber sits between 150 and 170 BPM, slower and heavier than 1990s gabber, and at that speed a beat lasts 375 milliseconds, long enough for the kick to carry a real tuned tail. The kick is built in layers, the genre's key difference from classic gabber: a short, clipped 909 attack, then a separate tuned, saturated tail lasting 250 to 300 milliseconds, glued together and bounced repeatedly, with snare or clap sitting back on 2 and 4. The bass is essentially the kick's tail, built from a sine or triangle with a pitch envelope dropping an octave over 100 milliseconds; chord changes come from pitching the kick's tail rather than adding a separate bassline. On top, the screech, a distorted resonant sawtooth lead through a bandpass filter, sits alongside shouted MC hooks and reverse cymbals.
