Gabber
Hardcore · 1992 · 170 to 200 BPM · also known as Gabba, Rotterdam Hardcore, Gabberhouse
Rotterdam, 1992: pure Dutch hardcore, crushed kicks at 160 to 190, hoover stabs, shaved heads and Australian tracksuits. A massive working class, popular culture in the Netherlands, mocked then rehabilitated, it produced its own slang, its own dance, hakken, and a mainstream second life in the late 2010s. The kick is a national identity, and almost everything else in the mix bends around it.

Producing Gabber
Push between 160 and 190 bpm, most classic Rotterdam production around 170 to 180, with no swing, no nuance: the hakken dance follows every kick, so each one must sound identical. Build the kick by clipping a 909 hard until the waveform turns nearly square and its tail becomes a sustained tone, heavy saturation, EQ to strip the low end, then clipping again, paired with a forward snare or lone clap and near-absent, heavily saturated hats. There is no separate bass: the crushed kick's tail is the bassline, tuned so it lands on the track's key, matching hoovers and stabs to it. Layer the Alpha Juno hoover played high as a riff, shouted film and cartoon samples, sirens and fast-vibrato saws, all pushed through the same distortion as the kick.
