Producing Dark Electro
Dark electro sits between 120 and 140 BPM, straight and metronomic with no swing, some tracks dropping to 100 for liturgical passages; keep the kick perfectly regular and let irregularity come from off-grid noise samples, a slamming door, a medical instrument, a breath. The kick is drier and tighter than its electro-industrial parent, a short 909 with no reverb, while the snare is thin but drenched in a long, dark reverb around 3 seconds that builds the autopsy-room feel, and hats alternate cleanly between two velocities. The bass is a minor-key arpeggio rather than a repeated note, a sawtooth with a lowpass filter opening slowly over 8 bars, descending root, fifth, minor third, minor second for the chill. The voice is whispered then pushed through heavy overdrive with the formant lowered, set against icy pads and horror-film samples.
