Neue Deutsche Haerte
Industrial · 1997 · 90 to 130 BPM · also known as NDH, Neue Deutsche Harte
Neue Deutsche Harte: 1990s Germany welded industrial metal to declaimed German lyrics, low tuned guitars over electronic sequences, and a deep, spoken vocal delivery. Rammstein became its global monument, but the scene runs from Oomph! to its current heirs. This is the stadium sized branch of the industrial lineage, pyrotechnics included, built as much for arenas of thousands as for underground clubs of a few hundred fans.

Producing Neue Deutsche Haerte
Tempos run from 90 to 130 BPM, with many tracks around 100 to 120 in a heavy, near half time feel, the groove square and locked to the grid like modern metal. The drums are metal drums, real or sampled, kick on quarter notes or doubled sixteenths, a huge snare on two and four through a long room reverb, eighth note hats, ride on the choruses and a crash on the strong beats. Under the acoustic kick, layer a saturated 909 kick for electronic weight, with a constant sixteenth note synthetic sequence running throughout. The bass follows the guitar in unison: low tuned guitars play palm muted eighths on the root, doubled exactly by a slightly distorted electric bass, with a square synth bass an octave below adding the machine edge underneath.
