EBM
Industrial · 1981 · 120 to 140 BPM · also known as Electronic Body Music, Body Music, Techno-Industrial, Industrial Dance, Synth-Industrial
Electronic Body Music: Belgium and Germany between 1983 and 1989 militarize synth pop, square sequenced basslines, chanted shouts, disciplined pounding. Front 242 coins the term, DAF the posture. It is the first European electronic music built for a collective moving body, and the direct link to new beat and then hard techno. Its revival has never really stopped since 2010, and its rigid machine pulse still defines an entire strand of club music.

Producing EBM
Keep it between 120 and 130 bpm with a perfectly straight groove, zero swing, everything sequenced in rigid sixteenths, never played by hand. Build the kick from a dry TR-808 with a short decay on every beat, an 808 clap on 2 and 4 through a short gated reverb, closed hats with strong accents on the beat, and sampled metallic percussion, drums, anvils, pipes, on the offbeats. For bass, sequence a single square wave note in tight sixteenths through a low-pass around 300 to 800Hz: the root sits on the first three sixteenths, the octave jumps on the fourth for the bounce, no portamento, no sidechain. Fill in with sequencer stabs, sampled brass and metal hits, and a doubled, shouted vocal with a short slapback and plate reverb.
