Fidget House
Minimal · 1999 · 125 to 130 BPM · also known as Scratchy Electrohouse
Fidget house was a joyous accident of the years 2005 to 2009: house music chopped into hiccups, basslines twisted out of shape, and pitched vocals that skip and stutter, running the insolence of UK garage through the blender of blog house. The name started as a joke between Jesse Rose and Switch, and the style burned fast and bright, leaving its mark on bass house and on every producer who grew up on its twelve inch singles.

Producing Fidget House
Fidget house runs 125 to 130 BPM, usually 128, with an exaggerated 60 to 66 percent swing on the sixteenths, giving it a jerky, hiccuping feel borrowed from UK garage, percussion pushed far behind the beat and some bass hits landing early. A fat 909 kick, often layered with a tuned 808, plays every beat except one or two removed each four bars for the hiccup, with a big clap on two and four through a gated reverb, heavily swung closed hats jumping in velocity. The bass is the true center: detuned saws through a resonant filter with a fast pitch envelope dropping a few semitones on each note, modulated by a synced LFO sweeping the cutoff, syncopated and full of gaps. Pitched, chopped vocal syllables, often shifted up for a chipmunk effect, sit over bleeps and short stabs.
