Ro-Minimal
Minimal · 1999 · 122 to 128 BPM · also known as Romanian Minimal, Rominimal, Minimal Roumain
The Romanian school of minimal, born in Bucharest in the mid 2000s around Arpiar: endless loops, tiny organic sounds, a clean swing, ten-hour sets where time dissolves. Villalobos is its outside godfather, Rhadoo, Petre Inspirescu and Raresh its local masters. The scene insists on its difference from Berlin minimal, and vinyl remains a religion there, played in sets built to last an entire night.

Producing Ro-Minimal
Sit between 123 and 126 bpm with a clean, discreet swing applied with clockmaker precision to the percussion only, organic percussion sitting slightly after the grid while the kick stays on it. Extract a groove from an old house record and apply it lightly to everything but the kick, since ro-minimal is built for ten-hour sets that must stay mixable throughout. Build a very round kick, no clap, just a muted rimshot or wood tap on 2 and 4, and organic, felted percussion, congas, bongos, shakers, programmed over several bars so nothing repeats identically. For bass, keep it almost subliminal, a pure sub sine on the root in long notes, occasionally joined by a shorter second bass on an offbeat. Layer intimate field recordings, tiny organic sounds, and dub delays synced to the percussion.
The full production course, in French: tempo, drums, bass, sounds, arrangement, mix, plugins and machines, and a step by step start.
