Orchestral Trance
Trance · 2002 · 132 to 140 BPM · also known as Symphonic Trance, Epic Orchestral Trance
Trance written like a score: sampled strings, classical harmonic progressions, breakdowns that unfold like a symphonic movement. Tiesto carried it to stadiums with Elements of Life, and Andy Blueman turned it into fine craftsmanship. This is the point where uplifting trance meets film music, with all the grandeur and unashamed kitsch that implies, sitting somewhere between a club anthem and a concert hall score.

Producing Orchestral Trance
Play at 136 to 140 BPM, the uplifting tempo, but think in movements rather than blocks, as if writing a score, over a straight grid. A breakdown can run three minutes and include a key change, a slowing of the harmony, or a section built entirely in whole notes, with full tracks stretching to ten or twelve minutes. Count in eight bar phrases that match melodic lines, and plan a key change up a tone for the final drop. On the drop, use uplifting style drums, a clean kick, clap and snare on two and four, and add orchestral percussion on top, timbales on the first beats of eight bar blocks, a big bass drum reinforcing the kick, and a fanfare snare roll. The bass is an offbeat sawtooth doubled by sampled cellos and double basses for warmth.
