Lento Violento

Hardcore · 1999 · 90 to 110 BPM · also known as Slow Hard, Lento

Lento violento is Gigi D'Agostino's own invention: hardstyle and Italian dance music slowed down to 100 or 120 beats per minute, heavy slow-motion kicks, and simple melodies repeated until they become hypnotic. The name says it all, slow and violent. It remains an Italian cult sound above all, regularly rediscovered whenever a slowed-down edit spreads across social media, decades after its first run of records.

Producing Lento Violento

Lento violento sits between 85 and 115 BPM, most of D'Agostino's own tracks around 90 to 105, essentially hardstyle and Italian dance slowed almost by half, so each kick becomes an event lasting over 600 milliseconds. Build a distorted hardstyle-style kick with a long tuned tail, on every beat or sometimes only on one and three with a softer kick on two and four, since a slight ten to twenty millisecond delay on the melody gives everything a trailing feel. A real dance bassline can sit underneath, a filtered saw or square around 400Hz playing a simple eighth-note motif, tonic, tonic, fifth, tonic, like in italo dance, lightly saturated and sidechained with a long release so the pump is felt. On top, write simple minor-key saw leads with portamento, repeated unchanged, alongside sampled accordions, a D'Agostino trademark, and pitched-down vocals.
