Deep Techno
Techno · 2008 · 125 to 135 BPM · also known as Hypnotic Techno, Hypnotic, Deep Hypnotic Techno
Deep techno is a techno of patient repetition, an heir to minimalism and dub, carried through the 2010s by the Italian scene around Donato Dozzy and Neel. Its variations are minute, its textures organic, and time stretches until it becomes genuine trance. It is the techno of afterparties and forest clearings, the kind that unfolds over hours. Deep techno and hypnotic techno are the same current under two names: labels say deep, dancers say hypnotic, and this atlas counts them as a single genre. Its patience runs directly counter to the drop driven logic of much modern club music, rewarding long, undivided attention rather than a series of peaks.

Producing Deep Techno
Deep techno sits between 124 and 132 BPM, often 127 or 128, with a very light groove, around 10 percent, since motion comes from turning sixteenths and near invisible variations across long, 32 or 64 bar sections. A kick built from filtered white noise, self oscillating near 39 Hz, sits under a low acoustic tom playing sixteenths in the gaps left by the kick and an organic sixteenth click randomized in timing and velocity, felt rather than driven. The bassline stays a dark, continuous sixteenth pattern filtered low on the tonic, or a single sine undulating through an LFO modulated filter, almost never changing, mono, free of reverb. Above it, slowly realigning modular sequences, sustained drones, filtered field recordings, and felted percussion through echo and reverb create a cavernous space, no stabs, no hoover.
