Jumpstyle
Hardcore · 1999 · 140 to 150 BPM · also known as Jump Style, Jumpen
Belgium and the Netherlands, around 2007: a simplified, bouncing form of hardstyle at 140 to 150 BPM, built for a codified jumping dance that YouTube turned into a European teenage phenomenon. Patrick Jumpen became its face, with millions of views as proof. The wave receded quickly, leaving the dance itself as a generational memory, still revived at reunion parties by fans now well into adulthood.

Producing Jumpstyle
Jumpstyle plays between 140 and 150 BPM, often 145, a little slower than the hardstyle it comes from. This tempo matches the dance itself, each beat a jump and each offbeat a landing, so kick and offbeat bass must stay regular, with no swing and no velocity variation anywhere. What sets it apart from hardstyle is simplicity: no breakdown, no screech, just kick, bass and a plain melody. Build a shortened, drier hardstyle kick with a clear tok and a short tail, on every beat with no rolls or variation, since the dancer counts on it. Add a fairly dry clap on two and four, discreet open hats on the offbeats and closed hats in eighths. The bass is a light reverse bass on every offbeat, shorter than in hardstyle, sitting on the root and following the chords.
